HST SIMPLIFIED

HST comes into effect on 01JUL10. However, in the travel industry, all tickets purchased on 01MAY10 or later for travel 01JUL10 or later are subject to HST - WHERE APPLICABLE.

Here are the new rules simplified:

TRAVEL WITHIN CANADA: If you are planning to travel within Canada on 01JUL10 or after - if you purchase your ticket BEFORE 01MAY10, you will only pay GST and can avoid paying HST - an additional cost of 8%.

TRANSBORDER TRAVEL: If you are travelling to the United States, nothing will change - GST currently applies and will continue to be applied after 01JUL10.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL: International travel is zero-rated - GST has never applied and HST will not apply.

The bottom line? If you are travelling within Canada 01JUL10 or later - purchase your ticket before 01MAY10 and you will save 8%.
